OSIF releases community-based Suricata IDP engine

On December 31, 2009, the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF) announced the initial beta release of a new, open-source Intrusion Detection and Intrusion Prevention System (IDP) engine. The new IDP engine, code named Development of the Suricata engine is being performed by an international team of software developers, quality assurance and performance testing experts who coordinated through the non-profit OISF (www.openinfosecfoundation.org). Support of the OISF has come from private donations as well as sponsorship from several leading international network security companies, including Bivio, Breach Security Labs, Endace, Everis and Nitro Security. OISF has also received significant funding from the United States Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate.

According to Jonkman, the Suricata engine will merge established Intrusion Detection Technologies with a number of new techniques and ideas to build the next generation in Network Defense.
